Around 1905 an old boxcar became the first post office when the Chicago Northwestern Railroad Company began serving the area. It was dubbed “Underwood” after John Underwood. To avoid confusion with other communities similarly named, the town underwent several name changes. New Underwood has finally become the community’s permanent name.
